Meet the people building Medquara, and why we want students to see what medicine is really like before they commit to it.

    Dr Samran Shahid

    Co-Founder, Medquara

    Medicine graduate from Newcastle University with research experience spanning neurosurgery, neuroscience, and translational medicine. He has worked with neurosurgical research teams at the University of Iowa and Stanford University, contributing to clinical and translational research across cerebrovascular disease, neurooncology, and epilepsy. He is the Founder of the International Neuroscience Research Consortium (INRC), a global network of neuroscientists, neurosurgeons, and computational biologists researching progesterone isoform expression in meningioma and the electrophysiological features of drug-resistant epilepsy. His work brings together clinical medicine and neuroscience with a particular interest in advancing research that can ultimately improve our understanding and treatment of neurological disease.

    Dr Muhammad Obair Ata

    Co-Founder, Medquara

    Medicine graduate from Newcastle University and is currently based in Canada. His research interests lie in public health and primary care, with a particular focus on escalation of care and improving the integration of healthcare services within communities. He is especially interested in holistic approaches to medicine and in developing effective models for integrating rural communities into the healthcare system across Alberta. He has a broader interest in improving accessibility, continuity, and efficiency of healthcare delivery, particularly for communities that can face barriers to accessing appropriate care. He was also a recipient of the Newcastle University EDI Grant, supporting his work and interests in equity, diversity, and inclusion.

    Dr Ali Moustafa

    Co-Founder, Medquara

    Medicine graduate from Newcastle University with research experience across neuro-oncology and neurology. As a member of the International Neuroscience Research Consortium (INRC), he leads the consortium’s clinical research arm, working at the intersection of neuroscience, neurosurgery, and clinical medicine. His research interests include pediatric neuro-oncology, with work investigating the role of BRAF inhibitors in pediatric low-grade gliomas, which was presented at the prestigious Society of British Neurological Surgeons (SBNS) conference in October 2026.

    Syed Abdul Aziz

    Team Member, Medquara

    Bioinformatics graduate from SRIHER and B.Sc. Biomedical Sciences graduate from Newcastle University, with research experience spanning computational biology, structural bioinformatics, drug discovery, genomics, and transcriptomics. He currently works as a Project Associate at CSIR-CLRI, focusing on molecular dynamics simulations, molecular docking, virtual screening, structural analysis, and computational drug discovery. He has also worked as a Computational Biologist with the International Neuroscience Research Consortium (INRC), contributing to research involving computational oncology, multi-omics analysis, and therapeutic target identification. Experienced as the Secretary of the ISCB-RSG Tamil Nadu Node, where he has organised and led bioinformatics workshops and webinars for students and researchers.

  • Dr Shazeb Akhtar

    Team Member, Medquara

    Medicine graduate from Newcastle University and a researcher with interests spanning neurosurgery, neuroscience, and medical education. He is currently based in the United Kingdom, where he works as a resident doctor within the NHS. Alongside his clinical and research work, he is a strong advocate for medical students and resident doctors, with a particular interest in supporting their academic and professional development. He has presented three research abstracts at the prestigious Society of British Neurological Surgeons (SBNS) conference in 2026. He is also passionate about medical education and mentoring, particularly helping high-school students who are considering a career in medicine. Through Medquara, he hopes to share his experiences of medical training, research, and clinical practice while helping students better understand the realities of pursuing medicine and make informed decisions about their future academic pathways.

    Dr Saya Alasaadi

    Team Member, Medquara

    Medicine graduate from University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland, currently working as a resident doctor within the NHS in the United Kingdom. She has a strong interest in medical education and is passionate about supporting medical students throughout their training and professional development. Alongside her clinical work, she has a keen interest in research and academic medicine, having contributed to seven published research papers across a range of medical topics. Her involvement in research has strengthened her interest in evidence-based medicine and the role of research in improving clinical practice and medical education. She is also passionate about teaching and creating accessible learning opportunities for students. Through Medquara, she hopes to draw on her experiences in medical school, research, and early clinical practice to support aspiring medical students, provide insight into medical training, and help students develop the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed as they progress towards a career in medicine.
